　　根据有关言语神经生理机制的研究，认为4～10岁是开始学习外语的最佳年龄。因为在年龄幼小时，左脑引起的失语症，可以靠右脑机能来弥补，年龄大些后，左脑损伤引起的失语症就无法补救，这说明，儿童时期的大脑机能有较大的可塑性。所以，这一时期幼儿是有能力学习外语的。儿童从6岁起，其辨音能力、认知能力、语调和语音大体上已开始退化。日本著名幼儿教育专家也认为0～6岁是语言发展的最佳时期，处于这一时期的幼儿有形成两个以上言语中枢的可能性。若在最佳时期只接受母语的'刺激，那么，母语中枢以外的言语中枢就逐渐退化。儿童进入学龄后，母语中枢已形成一整套固定的控制模式，这时再学习第二种语言，母语中枢就很难接受。因此，如果我们能抓住幼儿期对幼儿进行第二语言的教育，其潜力和发展是无限的。
