in my understanding, if we refer to an ideal college life as a formal western dinner, then a high gpa, that is, grade point average, should be the main course, while an active part in activities, together with associations, means the appetizer. some romances, of course, play the role as desserts. they are the 3 key elements for an ideal college life.
those, however, are not what college life is all about. as we all know, college is wildly different from middle school. it connects not only adolescence to adulthood, but also the ivory tower to the real society. therefore, the ideal college life is that i become matured both physically and mentally, and that i obtain qualified academic knowledge and get well prepared for society at the same time.
under this circumstance, i never epect my college life to be too ideal, or you can call it too perfect. it is not realistic to make all things on my own way, with everyone liking me, winning the first prize all the time, and so on. of course, i’d like to lead a carefree life. however, this does little good to my future. what really helps is hardships like failure, betrayal, and unjust treatment. only after eperiencing those can i know what society is like, and what life is like.

Ladies and Gentlemen: My topic is Honesty. As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story. /chuzhong/chusan/ 65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure. In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth. He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 20xx, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome. When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error. Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. In the past,the housing conditions in our city were rather poor.A lot of families had to live in one room which was their bedroom,dining-room as well as drawing-room.There was no toilet and kitchen.Sometimes,we could find that in a flat with one bedroom and a living-room lived three generations.
Now many new blocks of flats have been set up and some more are under construction.Row upon row of shabby,low and old houses are pulled down.There are some streets lined with completely new blocks.Tens of thousands of families have moved into their new homes.Nearly all of those new flats have gas cookers and radiators provided by central heating.
As far as we know,new blocks of flats are also taking the place of humble old houses in other cities.The changes of the housing conditions in our city as well as other cities are the result of the rapid development of our economics.
